Kick off the New Year More Sustainably

Eat More Veggies and Fruits to Live Sustainably

This post provides tips and ideas to help you kick off the New Year more sustainably, and illustrates why that’s a brilliant idea.

Sustainable practices support ecological, human, and economic health and vitality.

Sustainable living is based on the fact that living things are finite, and need to be used or conserved wisely.

Sustainable practices take a long-term view at ways natural and manufactured resources are consumed. It also looks for remedies for overconsumption and abuse.

In simplest terms, sustainability is about our children and our grandchildren, and the world we will leave them.

Look below for ways we can reduce our carbon footprint and live more sustainably.

Swap out Traditional Foods for Plant-based Ones

The carbon footprint for those who eat a plant-based diet accounts for 75 percent less greenhouse gas emissions than those who eat more than 3.5 ounces of meat a day.

New research from the University of Oxford indicates whole food vegan eaters cause significantly less harm to land, water, and biodiversity than omnivore eaters.

Experiment  with tried and true recipes, by decreasing portion size of animal sourced foods and increase amount of fruits, whole grains, and vegetables that you incorporate into menu planning.

Make Your Bread or Pizza Dough

Be adventurous and try a new plant-based food recipe each week, perhaps one with a new grain like spelt or legume like lentils. Have some fun and try making homemade bread or pizza dough too.

Add an extra serving of vegetables to your daily plate or add fruit to your breakfast and smoothies.

After a few weeks of modifying portions, add a portion of a fruit and vegetable you don’t eat regularly. For example, add a kiwi to fruit salad or cauliflower to that stew, and give them a trail run.

Update Water Management Practices

Did you know water heaters account for about 18% of your home's energy use? Set the water temperature a few degrees lower, and wash clothes on cold.

These habits can reduce your energy consumption, save money and natural resources, maintain the vibrancy of your clothes, and eliminate 860 lbs. of CO2 emissions a year.

Showering with cool water is actually incredibly beneficial for your skin, and it can boost your immune system and metabolism!

Cutting down on time we spend running a bath, washing the car, or watering a lawn can conserve much water as well.

Water Storage Tank and Sustainable Living

With droughts, wildfires, and shortage of water in the world, consider collecting rain water in a water storage tank. This type of container can store water for irrigation, farming, fire suppression, food preparation, and many other uses.

When we pause to consider that water is essential in sustaining life for all living creatures on our planet, we may foster a deeper sense of reverence and responsibility towards this finite natural resource.

Tips to Save Money and Water

Reduce or Eliminate Single-Use Products

Single-use products, including plastic shopping bags, plastic water bottles, and plastic take-out/take-away containers pollutes the planet. Bring your own reusable cloth grocery bags for shopping, non-plastic reusable water bottle for drinking water on the go, and reusable containers for meals to go.

At home, wash out and keep glass jars from food or use glass containers that can be washed and reused to store leftovers.

Food Storage Containers that are Eco-friendly

If a single-use product is your only option, look for items that are made from recycled materials.

When you order from the internet, make sure the products and  company you place the order with uses environmentally friendly packaging and shipping materials, and is working to be net zero.

Shop Smart and Track Spending

Be mindful about your belongings. Before you buy anything new, try to reinvent, repair, and renovate things you already own.

Instead of tossing out old clothes, electronics, and household items, ask yourself whether it can be mended, altered, or cleaned up.

Sell things that crowd your closets, cabinets, and dresser drawers to a secondhand shop, swap with a friend, or donate items that no longer fit you to a local charity.

Donate, sell, or exchange clothing for sustainability

Many household items including plastic storage containers or plastic bottles contain harmful elements. Once they are dumped into a landfill, forever chemicals can leach into the soil or ground water or even end up in our reservoirs or the ocean.

Finding a second home for unwanted items is a good way to avoid creating garbage. It also curtails production of new products, and reduces toxic emissions caused when garbage rots or fossil fuels are burned.

When you do need to purchase a tech product or service, try to refurbish one or support companies that have reached their goal of carbon neutrality or have taken steps to achieve it. For example, read about top carbon neutral companies in the digital space.

Live with Less and Do Your Part to Help Earth Survive

Some of the sustainable moves I suggest you adopt for the New Year may not come as second nature to you.
See them for what they truly are. Things are not a reflection of your personality or achievements. They are simply objects that you have chosen to keep in your life.

If you resist the urge to buy stuff on impulse, it encourages you to live within your means, as well as reduce the demand for new products and resources required to produce them.

Living simply means you have less clutter, can locate and see what you have with appreciation, and live more harmoniously with our changing environment.

Releasing objects so others may have them, conserves natural resources, reduces waste, and promotes sustainable consumption habits.

Make Sustainability a Family Goal
Make Sustainability a Family Goal

Focus on experiences over material possessions. Spend time with loved ones and/or travel to new places by using eco-friendly modes of transportation whenever possible.

No matter how we view it, living more sustainably needs to be the new normal. Each one of us will decide if and how we do that. Please choose wisely. Our survival depends on it.

How to Shine in Fall Fashion Colors

Yellow is a Popular Fall Fashion Color

Fashion designers and marketing experts aim to make clothing that will sell by choosing colors, shapes, textures, and patterns that appeal to our senses, flatter and refresh us, and even make us feel ravishing this fall.

Updated 10/01/2026

In fact, research shows that specific colors have vibrational properties that speed up, balance, or calm down thinking and behavior.

As consumers, we sort through the offerings and do our best to choose those garments that will last for years, and have a positive influence on our mood, behaviors, and even impact our sense of well-being. To learn about sustainable fashion see "10 Simple Steps to Being More Sustainable."

Just be mindful that color preferences work at the cellular level and bypass reason. What's right for one person may not be right for someone else.

Read "Secrets to Selecting Top Fashion Colors to Flatter You" for ideas about how to coordinate your attire to your complexion and skin undertone.

Wear Colors to flatter complexion and skin undertone

How to Shine in Fall Fashion Colors

1. START WITH WHAT YOU HAVE.

I'm a big believer in repairing, redesigning, and upcycling clothes that are already in my closet. Before each season begins I look through my clothing and try on pieces I am considering using during the coming months.

I question "does the garment look attractive as is or can it be altered, paired with something I haven't thought of before, or layered underneath or above something else? Can I accessorize it with a colorful pair of shoes, belt, shawl, or handbag?"

I weed out those items that are beyond repair or look unsightly on me. Then, before I change my mind and stick the clothes back in my closet, I donate them and/or hold a clothing exchange event with friends.

Any time I buy or thrift something new, I maintain the one piece in and one piece out rule.

Then I observe which colors catch my eye during the day, and what feelings they evoke.

You can do this too. Sort through your closet and wardrobe. Then check out what the online and local clothing stores are showing.

See what others wear and evaluate which clothing colors relax and calm you. Try to become more mindful of specific color combinations and ways they make you feel.

2. EMBRACE COLOR COMBINATIONS THAT RESONATE WITH YOU.

Feel unsettled, down in the dumps, or invisible? An excellent color to wear is RED. It’s the color of the root chakra, the energetic base of all the ascending chakras. Read "Root Chakra Tips to Support, Stabilize, and Sustain You" to discover what I mean.

Red clothing and forward bend yoga pose

Doing grounding yoga poses like forward bend in RED attire helps us feel centered, energized, focused on our strengths, and helps us get on with our day.

Another way to practice connecting to earth red/energy is to recite affirmations. Use those that are meaningful to you.

I feel invigorated and empowered whenever I visualize the root chakra.

My health is excellent and I am fortunate to be well-balanced, fit, prosperous, and strong.

My spirit is grounded deep in the earth. I reserve time to balance and nurture mind, body, and spirit in the great outdoors often.

GREEN provides healing energy for most physical and emotional illness. Hues of green create balance, harmony, personal development, self-acceptance, self-compassion, and rejuvenation. When we wear or envision GREEN it helps lift anxiety, self-pity, confusion, and renews our spirits.

Relax, Renew, Refresh with Green Energy

GREEN symbolizes nature and is a soothing, refreshing color to don, especially for those who are hyperactive or have a racing mind.

Look for a deep, rich GREEN hue called Pine Needle. This hue adds a touch of nature to your fall wardrobe, exuding a sense of grounding and stability. Incorporate Pine Needle into your outfits with a scarf, sweater, or trousers for a sophisticated, outdoorsy look.

Another GREEN you'll see everywhere comes from Pantone, and it's fashioned after the color of the vegetable, Kohlrabi, a medium light shade of green similar to Pistachio.

BLUE hues are calming, relaxing, and soothes fears. Blue is favored by more people than any other. This color represents release and renewal, free flow, inspiration, and relaxation.

One example of a muted BLUE tone popular this fall is Lacecap Hydrangea. This icy blue offers a color punch without being over the top. It’s also a color that can work for all four seasons, depending on what you pair it with.

For fall, balance this floral-inspired blue with deeper shades like gem-tones, caramel brown, mustard yellow, or even fiery red.

BLUE hues can be bright and attract attention. One example of a powerful blue hue is Cobalt Blue.

Turquoise is a wonderful hue of BLUE to select, if you need some help bringing your health and wellness to the forefront. It's sometimes called our master healer. Turquoise energy can enhance the immune system. Wear a turquoise necklace or earrings, turquoise tee, or jacket.

GREEN-BLUE colors including aqua, aquamarine, and teal are easy on the eyes. These shades reflect the colors in water and sky, and wearing a teal sweatshirt creates a sense of tranquility and ease.

Teal is a blue-green color that's easy on the eyes

Many people find bright YELLOW and golden yellow invigorate, help their power of concentration, and create a sunny outlook.

YELLOW also works to heal digestive track issues and infuse more joy into life.

Try to take your emotional and physical temperature at various times during the day. See whether you become tense, especially when you face a challenge, doubt your abilities, are sad, anxious, or have low energy.

Wear yellow socks, a yellow slicker, or carry a yellow backpack. Pause to take in this yellow energy or visualize a yellow flower or sunlight streaming through the windows in your home or office workspace to enliven you.

ORANGE helps unblock emotions. If you need support as you grieve a relationship or feel another loss, wear orange. Put on an orange tee, scarf, or boots when depressed, and see whether orange can draw more joy and lightness into daily living. Red ORANGE is one of the most popular fall 2023 colors.

Do you own articles of clothing that are bright orange, terracotta, pumpkin, rust or other shade of orange? Those who wear colors in the orange family are usually people with a friendly attitude and lively demeanor.

A little bit of orange goes a long way. Wearing too much orange at one time may make you feel confused, disoriented, and claustrophobic. It can worsen nausea or dizziness.

Since ancient times, PURPLE has been associated with the color of the clergy, nobles, and the rich. Those who are attracted to purple may have an artistic or dramatic flair.

Purple is favored by people with an artistic flair

Some wear purple clothing, because they intuitively sense it clears confusion and calms hyperactivity.

Others wear it to connect with their higher wisdom, speed up natural healing energy in the body, or supply inspiration for transformation.

There are many hues of PURPLE, and this fall burgundy, plum, lilac, mauve, and violet are showing up often.

3. GO FOR PRACTICAL, ECO-FRIENDLY, AND BEAUTIFUL

Clothing can be comfortable, beautiful, and fun to wear, as well as provide warmth and protection.

Instead of owning a closet full of so-so clothes you "just feel okay in," decide on a capsule wardrobe of three outfits you feel great in.

If you need to update an outfit, fill in with a high-quality piece like a blouse or sweater in a color you love.

Research sustainable fashion and find and support those businesses that use textiles that are manufactured, constructed, and marketed in a responsible, conscious way that accounts for their environmental and socioeconomic impact.

Look for clothing that's made with organic and natural fibers, biodegradable materials, uses natural dyes, little or no-waste pattern making, employs ethical labor practices, and are handmade/artisan crafted.

Spend time shopping vintage, perusing thrift stores, searching though hidden family heirlooms, or sorting through that old foot locker in the attic.

To shine from the inside, wear clothing that is comfy, attractive, made well, ignites pleasure, and delights your senses!

What's your favorite color and do you wear clothes made of that color often?

Do you use certain colors to create an effect and which ones are they?

Did you learn anything new about colors today and how do you think that can help you?

Before you go consider this. The world of color is fascinating. You can be more fascinating too. Which color or colors makes you feel great? Why not wear your favorite colors more often?

How to Save Money this Summer by Conserving Energy at Home

Save Energy Be Eco-friendly at Home

For several years I've explored sustainable ways to save money and conserve home energy usage. The predictions are in for an extremely hot, dry southwestern U.S. summer, and I'm striving to save and conserve wherever I can.

Post updated 6/13/2025

To start, I examined my current home energy conservation/usage plan. With a few simple adjustments, I am saving money and greening the planet as well. Keep on reading to find out what I did.

Many people are finding a need to tighten their budgets, and are searching for new ways to economize this summer and onwards.

I encourage you to look below for tips that show you frugal, eco-friendly energy saving techniques to use to save natural resources and help you live more sustainably.

Use green home cooling methods
before resorting to air
conditioning

Green Cooling Methods for Summer at Home

Employ passive ventilation methods in the early morning or later in the evening by opening doors, windows, skylights, vents, and louvres.

Let fresh air flow into and through your home for cooling, to remove moisture, and get rid of airborne pollutants.

Close windows and draw room darkening shades, curtains, or blinds, especially during peak hours of sunshine.

Opaque or insulated window coverings help block out the sun’s heat, makes it easier to keep your room cool, and reduces the need for fossil fuel used with air conditioning (therefore reducing utility bills).

When you turn on a ceiling fan, it creates a “wind-chill effect” that helps you feel more comfortable indoors.

Make sure to turn the fan off, before you leave the room.

For tips about how to select and install an energy efficient ceiling fan read this post.

When AC is on, for every degree you raise (make it warmer) the temperature, your energy consumption will decrease by about six percent. So, it’s important to find a balance between comfort and power usage.

Keep thermostat AC temperature as high as comfortable (approximately 78 degrees Fahrenheit), and use a fan to circulate the cool air. A slight reduction in energy use can maintain comfort as well as save money.

Program your thermostat to turn off, when you’re not home. There’s no need to keep your home cooler than necessary when nobody is there to enjoy it!

Keep a pitcher of drinking water in the refrigerator. This beats running tap water to cool it for drinking. This measure saves 200 to 300 gallons of water a month.

Room Darkening Drapes to Cool Home in Summer

Set your ceiling fan to run counterclockwise on a fast setting in the summer to push the cold air down.
Set air conditioning thermostat as
high as
comfortable
According to results from the 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey, 88% of U.S. households use air conditioning (AC) to cool their homes.

This makes AC the biggest summer electric energy drain in most households.

Keep your air conditioning system working in tip top shape. Schedule an AC unit tune-up each year, change filter often, and make necessary repairs as soon as they are needed.

Conserve water, a finite natural
resource

The water that comes out of faucets in your home or apartment accounts for more than
15 % of your total indoor water use or 1 trillion gallons of water across America each year. That's why it's so important to fix all leaking faucets ASAP.

The aerator tip of the faucet determines the maximum flow rate of the faucet. If you have an older kitchen faucet, consider getting an inexpensive new, water-effective one. Do the same for your bathroom faucets and shower heads too.

When preparing fruits and veggies, refrain from using running water to clean them. Instead, fill the sink or a large bowl with water and immerse produce to clean.

Afterward, water can go to watering plants in your garden and cuttings can be dumped on your compost pile. This can save 150 to 250 gallons of water per month. See Water Conservation Tips to Save Money and Green Daily Living for additional ideas.

Update lighting to save money and energy

Use daylight to naturally light your home whenever possible.
Traditional incandescent light bulbs use the most electricity, and must be replaced more often than their energy efficient alternatives.
Halogen incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), and light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs) use anywhere from 25-80 percent less electricity and last 3 to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs.

Energy Efficient Lights Conserve Energy at Home

Make the switch to energy-efficient lighting, and get the same amount of light for less money.

Lighting accounts for 15% of an average home's electricity use. When that household uses LED lighting, it saves approximately $225 in energy costs per year.

Although energy efficient bulbs are more expensive off the shelf, efficient energy use and longer lifetimes means that the cost is less in the long run.

While you're at it, install solar-powered outdoor lights instead of electric. They are inexpensive and a greener source of energy.

Be mindful about your energy
 usage choices

Run the dishwasher only when it's full. Use the eco-setting, if your dishwasher has one.

Operate your washing machine at times when you have a full load of clothes.

Except for the dirtiest of loads, wash clothes in cold water.

Set your refrigerator temperature between 37-40 degrees Fahrenheit and your freezer between 0 and 5.
Refrigerators and freezers operate most efficiently when full. Keep refrigerator and freezer full, even if you have to use water bottles to take up empty space.
Just be careful about overfilling these appliances, as this will restrict airflow and cause the motors to work harder.

Check refrigerator and freezer doors and note whether doors are sealed tightly. One rule of thumb is if a dollar bill shut in the door is easy to pull out, it’s time to replace the gasket.
Your clothes dryer is one of the largest energy guzzlers in the home, often consuming as much power as a new refrigerator, dishwasher, and clothes washer combined.
Summertime is a good time to air-dry clothing when possible. If you have to use your dryer, be sure to clean the lint filter after each use, use the auto-dry or moisture-sensor setting, and don't add wet items to a load that's already partially dry.

note: This post does not discuss major home renovations including converting from electric or gas to whole house solar power, upgrading all appliances to energy star equipment, replacing conventional windows with triple pane windows, new roofing, etc. Its purpose is to show inexpensive ways to save big.

Find new ways to be thrifty and live in harmony with the planet. One way I've found to do that is to check with my utility company, and get a discount for using energy only in off-peak hours.
I run my washing machine, dishwasher, and dryer only during off peak hours and reap monetary and eco-rewards (the grid is not taxed at its most vulnerable times). I encourage you to see whether your utility company offers a plan that reduces the price you pay for home energy too.
Adopt those energy conservation methods that resonate with you to save money and help reduce your carbon footprint this summer and beyond.
What are you doing to conserve natural resources, save money, and simplify living?
Please explain in the comments section below.
Have you used any of the methods outlined above?
What other things are you doing to green living?
I read and appreciate every comment, but will not be able to publish those with links in them. Thanks for understanding.

I post on the 1st and 15th of each month. Please add www.colors4health.com to your online reading list, as I offer eco-ideas, and wellness and color tips at the place where a healthy lifestyle and colors intersect.
