Effective Handwashing Strategy and Key Times to Use It

Handwashing Tips

Maintain health and reduce the chances of getting sick by brushing up on this effective handwashing strategy. Follow through by using it, especially at key times outlined below.

Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates washing our hands correctly plays and important part in preventing illness including colds, flu, and COVID-19. Proper handwashing also reduces the risk of spreading germs to others.

5 Easy Steps for Clean Hands

1. Wet hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.

2. Lather hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of hands, between fingers, and under nails.

3. Scrub hands for at least 20 seconds. Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice, for a fun way to keep track of time.

4. Rinse hands well under clean, running water.

5. Dry hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

Key Times to Wash Hands

Handwashing isn't the only important element that contributes to our well-being.

Eating right, physical activity, adequate rest and sleep, and reducing stress improves overall health and wellness, and increases resilience during COVID-19 and beyond.

  1. I have been a germaphobe all my life (even before becoming a nurse) so handwashing is a must do for me as I taught it to kids and later on my grandbabies. I carried hand sanitizer in my purse and in my vehicle way before COVID-19 ever thought about showing its face. It amazes me how many people do not routinely wash their hands! Thanks so much for linking up with me at my party #UnlimitedMonthlyLinkParty 19, open until December 26 at 12:05 am. Shared on social media.

  3. I feel like I'm washing my hands all the time. Thanks for all the tips- so important. We live in an apartment building in the winter with elevators and I am touching much more than in my house. Thanks and stay safe.
